English street cry the vendors used to advertise their bargain-priced tea. At
that time, a pot of tea was normally priced at truppence
(three pence), but enterprising vendors hungry for more business would often
lower the price to tuppence (two
pence) by shouting “Tea for Two!” Today
the phrase means something different. Now “Tea for Two” means a cozy teatime
for friends to relax and enjoy their time together.
